Default in Lap dust collectors

I am New to wood carving and trying to just start.I have worked with wood and have created many projects, but not carving.
Because of health issues , I can no longer do things i use to do,but I still want to learn to carve. But i want to enquire, about a Lap dust collector.Nothing large. And I wondered if anyone here among the experts know anything about them. Here is a small one i was looking at ;LAPBOARD DUST COLLECTOR-Wood Carvers Supply

Can anyone give me information about this product or similar one. Why i ask is ,Can I use such a product in my home (living room / bedroom) sort of thing, without making a mess, when i use a power tool/dremel to help carve the wood ?

I know one could probably make a cover as to not spread to much dust, but is it feesible to use in home , and it collect the dust efficiently ?

Thank you very much for your responses

New to carving
Eddie

Default Re: in Lap dust collectors

You could use it in your home, but you would still get some dust, even when using something like this you still should wear some sort of mask. If you look out on the net you can find plans to build one of these using a clothes dryer motor and squirrel cage for the vacumn. I built one at a cost of about $25.00 the dryer unit was given to me. The motor and squirrel cage sets on the floor and is attached to your lap board by a 4" hose.
Hope this helps
Larry
