Default L Irish_Relief instructions

I have purchased Landscapes in Relief by Ms Irish and have a couple of questions.

1. I photocopied a few of the patterns provided in the book and placed the rough and detailed copies together and held them up to a light source. The lines do not align from one sheet to the other. This will not work when the detailed sheet is pasted or carbon traced as some carving instructors recommend. What do you suggest?

2. As the author suggests, I want to start with one of the simpler patterns but detail instructions on what objects go on what layer/depth and which tools to use, etc are not include for simpler project; basic barn, or pages 94, 60, etc. I have been unable to locate instructions by the author on these simpler patterns provided in this book. Also the book was not identified as 'advanced' relief otherwise I would have sought a beginner book as I enjoy Ms Irish's work. Is there a way to get a bit more instruction on how to prepare and carve some of the other simpler patterns in this book?

Thanks,

Rich

I'm sure Susan will answer your questions here, but you'd probably get an answer faster if you'd just Private Message her instead, or go to her web-site and send an email.

She posts here under the name "Irish".

Here's a link to her profile which in turn will allow you to send a private message, or provide a link to go to her website.

Well I will try this one more time. I know Susan is really up to her ears with the business so I will do what I can.

First make your pattern , keep it simple as detail will be added much later in the process.
Use either a copier and change the size to your desired size or scan it into a drawning program.

Step two Copy the simple pattern on to your board. Using carbon paper , graphite paper , newspaper , self made graphite paper.

Step three Determine the layers . Susan normally has a 7 layer pattern. The simplest releif carving have at least three layers .
Front ( foreground) Center ( middle ) and Back ( background)

Layout the layers from 1-7 and make each section . Here is a relief showing the steps Relief Carving Wood Spirit Grape Man WIP

All relief are done in the same format .

Once you have established the layers determine the size of those layers. If they are 1/8 in depth then if your using 7 layers your carving will be at least 7/8 of an inch in depth. Which makes your block needed 1 3/4 inches thick.

Cutting the layers ,
if your doing it by hand , you can start at the front and move to the back. If your using a router to remove the unnecessary wood , set the router depth , to the upper most depth of the background and remove that section . Raise your router and do the same thing for each step to establish the depth of each layer.
If you have a wall which goes from 1 -7 then angle cut down along the wall edge to give you the angle.

Once you have established the general layers your ready to go back and do detail.

I bought the same pattern (it is the one I used on my candle holder post in pyroghraphy). It does not overlap perfectly, but pretty darn close. You have to move in about an inch or two on each end to mate the different pages-hope this helps.

Woops-hit post too quickly. She also has a great relief primer on her website.
