| | Kit for new carver Hello there,
I've always wanted to give carving a try, specifically a little chess set (nothing complicated, very basic pieces).
I live next to a lee valley which has a few of their basic carving sets in stock, most sets are palm tools, one has a lang-handle version. Would such a set -- - a 3/8" bent chisel
- a 3/8" skew chisel
- a 3/8" straight chisel
- a 9/64" straight gouge
- a 5/16" bent gouge
- a 9/64" bent parting tool
be appropriate to such a task, or am I looking in entirely the wrong place here. I can be a little slow at things like this, so if you have any advice, use small words and talk slowly!
thanks,
Jer |

Seriously, I'd think one of those sets would be a good place to start. As long as you are close to a Lee Valley check out a good quality bench or carving knife, too. Try the sets for comfort before choosing a palm style or long handle.. I have both and usually prefer the palm styles, but that is quite a mattrer of personal preference. Same with the bench or carving knife. You are fortunate being able walk into a Lee Valley and look things over.
If you were't that close I'd suggest you check with Little Shavers Wood Carving Supply for Rick's beginner set. Very similar items.

| | Re: Kit for new carver I've read over the little shaver's kit as well. I have (to this point) chosen the lee valley as it is so close I could hit a golfball from my door through their window (and I'm a terrible golfer...), and I prefer to give my cash to local businesses (I know lee valley isn't based in my city, but they do employ locals).
I did once, many years ago, use a palm-handled carving tool for .. something, I can't remember what now. I have vague memories of enjoying it, we'll have to see (my memory for most things is 100% awful).
A question about lee valley, for anyone more familiar with them than me: when looking on their websites I often see things which I did not see on display in the store. The website keeps the product codes used on their in-store order sheets. Do they stock much more than is on display in the retail stores, or if not on display, must it be ordered from their catalogue warehouse(s).
Thanks again,
Jer |

| | Re: Kit for new carver Jer, for us'ns "below the line" with no Lee Valley stores anywhere near, the catalog is all we have. They are prompt filling orders (usually get my orders within three days of order) and very good with return policy. So if you have to order, I wouldn't worry about it.

As a loyal Lee Valley customer I can tell you that yes everything that is in the catalogue is not on display in the store. They would need a huge factory to display it all. The "guys" there are always helpful and informative - no matter which store it is. So if you are in doubt - go in and ask if any of their staff are carvers - then ask them what they recommend. Or take one of their carving courses and ask that instructor. Just a thought. Look forward to seeing your work.

| | Re: Kit for new carver I did as suggested - they had 2 carvers (one round, one relief) there, and they were both incredibly helpful.
I imagine I'll be back in other threads to ask a zillion more carving questions. Thank you very much! | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
