Welcome Woodcarver, you will get alot of good advice here by some excellent carvers, here is my advice. Buy a starter set with a knife, palm tools, strop, glove etc., and be sure to wear the glove from day one. Get a good book on carving and get a subscription to WCI magazine. Below is a link to a great Co. that sells all kind of carving supplies and tools, they have an excellent starter kit as well as alot of great info. on their website, good honest folks. Best of luck and enjoy.

Ask many questions, the only stupid question is the one never asked. Buy books and look at the step by steps in the totorial section.

I just started, too. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have! A tip I have for people starting a new craft is that if you have a cool idea for something to make but don't think you're good enough, go ahead and try. I'm not saying you should start with something super complex, but something you really want to make will keep you more excited and focused. If it doesn't work out, it'll be fine.

carve a minimum of 30 minutes a day ( its like practicing the piano but with better results) also ask questions-here, there will be many responses and all are well meaning-- but you may find that you have different responses to the same answer from different people-- point is there is seldom only one way to accomplish a task--

My canned response: Go into your yard and find a stick...take a knife and start cutting (Stick not fingers) See what happens. Rinse and repeat
Welcome!
