If you're planning on painting (moving forward), I would recommend you try carving poplar instead of oak. White oak tends to be a bit hard & hard on the tools. By the way, you did a very good job. For this one, I'd go with stains instead of paint so you keep the natural wood grain or just use tung oil.

Your angel is beautiful. I myself would just stain it . But you do what ever you want. I want to thank all you who told me to check out the clubs on the left. I found 2 here in Pa.

I got lots and lots of oak and ash.
1 pallet of 1"x 10"x 18" Ash. $40
2 pallets of Oak $60

Good score on the oak & ash but they do tend to be very hard woods & not the most 'knife' friendly. However, using gouges and/or power will do much better on those woods.

I like hard woods, it makes me go slower, and take more time. In soft wood I go faster, and make a lot more mistakes.
Hard woods like oak, cut so clean I just love it!
