Hi! Just joined and as a rank beginner whittler I have been looking for some instructions. I managed to carve a simple woodspirit but want to learn how to carve a indian face, mind you, just something simple. I am near 80 so it will take a while to get things done.
Hoping to learn a lot here.
Where I live, in the north it is a long cold winter so this looks like a great hobby.
have a big box of band aids so here we go.
Thanks

Welcome aboard! You might look under the on-line wood carving classes or the tutorial sections. Arleen and others have some great videos or do a google search. You might look at Lynn Doughty's videos and carvings also OutWestWoodCarving He did a Native American with papoose not long ago and is a great teacher. Here's a link to some of his videos
Out West Woodcarving Videos's videos on Vimeo

Hope these help some!

Harold Enlow has a good stury stick and instruction book that takes you step by step through the process. Make use of the cold winter and enjoy your carving.

I think one of the absolute best step-by-step books for this would be "Carving the Human Face" by Jeff Phares: Carving the Human Face, Second Edition, Revised & Expanded He uses a native American as the subject in his instruction.
