Hi Coldmountain,
I have a warren cutlery set that has 3 gouges, a v\tool and 3 types of blades. it comes with a wooden handle with screw collars on one end (kind of a fancy exacto knife). it comes in a metal case about the size of a paperback book. it costs about $40-50.
it makes a good travel kit.
The main thing about carving is keep your tools sharp(remember the old razor strops the barbers used with the straight razors) "A sharp knife cuts what you want it to, A dull knife cuts you"
any good pocket knife will do also.

I am not familiar with all of the Swiss Army Knife patterns. If yours is one with a cork screw, I would recommend getting either another one without the cork screw or some other knife. The cork screw is almost sure to give you blisters due to it's placement. Do continue to carry the SAK though, just get another knife. Doesn't hurt to carry two or three. I usually have three, one of which is always a SAK (with cork screw). Darned things are just so handy.

Welcome to a fellow Left Coaster!

A pocket knife is enough to get started with, and after a while, you'll most likely want to try some other knives. Different shaped knives have different uses, just like gouges and chisels.

While you're at the Lee Valley 'site, check for their other carving tools. Good quality at reasonable prices.

Welcome,
I used to carve or whittle with a jackknife. But I never did any sreious carving until I bought a starter set of palm chisels. Chisels are now my preference, but do whatever you wish.

Sorry, but I guess I'll have to apologize. There was no harm done anyway. Besides now everybody knows my favorite tools for carving.

Oooops! One of my pet peeves is people not reading how old the post is or the previous replies. Sorry. Dang! That's embarrasing. Really is.
