Default Hunting DW and getting permisson to get on private land

Well I am pretty sure we have all ended up in this situation onetime or another. How to get permssion to get on private land. Well I finally gave in and went to the residence of the person that owned the land where I have seen alot of D/W. I pulled in as they were leaving , and they stopped. I got out introduced myself and said I was wondering who the person was that owned the land next to thier house. I already knew it was the person I was already talking too, but want to make sure anyways. I told him I was making walking sticks and had seen some willow that was on his land that would make great walking sticks and I was wondering if I could have a few. He said follow me and I will show you the land I own and tell you where it starts and ends. What a nice person even took the step to show me his land. He told he didn't mind as long as it was out of site and I didn't cut down more then I needed. I assured him I only took wind fallen willow or ones that I select for certain shapes and sizes and I would leave his land clear of any trash that might have fallen out of my pockets or was tossed as trash . I then said I would give him and his wife a walking stick for letting me get the D/W .
Well I stopped yesterday and left a walking stick for them. His wife came to the door and was happy to see the stick I had made. I said ONE MORE will be on its way. I said I may need a few more sticks, but I would only take them with her permission. Of course I was given that permission. So I guess if you ask the person or person for permission to get on the land and give them a gift in return, you pretty much will have no trouble. As he said, He only thought they were nuisance trees , he chuckled and said I guess they arnt eh? I said no, but if you need them cleared out I will come and do it LOL!!free of charge.
I am talking about 3 to 4 acres of willow and some pretty awesome shapes and diamonds.
It isn't just the fact that I seen all the willows , but the nature you see as well. A big doe deer about 10 yards from me chewing on swamp grass and actting as if I was just another part of nature. This weekend I will be back in the wilds floating a river to search out trees that had been floated down the river back in the late 1800s and I will try to recover one with the logging # on it still. I will keep you posted if you are interested. I am trying to get all these thing's done before I am either to old to do so or before my arthritis sets in to where I have troubles.

Congrats on finding a good DW patch. I have only had one bad experience stopping to ask permission and that person had other reasons to be suspicious. Once I explained that I only wanted a couple sticks and offered to swap him one of my woodspirit sticks for permission he let me go in and get what I wanted.

Thumbs up Re: Hunting DW and getting permisson to get on private land

Thank you! I know sometimes you get property owners that are very territorial about their land. I dont blame them at all for not give permission to get on their land. I would probable be the same if I was worried about law suits from injurys that will happen from time to time. I know in this area especially with the old iron mines and test pits that litter the countryside. Always a concern even now as I walk through the woods. Oh and Cougars lol not to concerned about wolves lol.....natures gaurds

Clifford, I was born and raised in Illiniois! alot of reason they dont want you on thier land most times is because of drug related reasons lol.....riddle ......what is a crop but isn't a crop that grows between another crop. It is something you dont want to come across and if you do , dont gaggle gauk at it , RUN LOL and dont look back, do as forest was told....."RUN FOREST RUN" no reason to get a rump full of buckshot or other wounds.
