Default How's the Quality of Harold Enlow's Carving Sticks

Will be asking for several of Harold Enlow's Study Stick Kits from Santa. How's the Quality of the Study Sticks? Are they made of Bass Wood?

I have "Carving Faces Workbook" by Harold Enlow. Excellent book. I am hoping the Study Stick Kits will add greatly to the Workbook.

The reason I'm asking, I have read several Neg. Reviews on the quality of the Study Sticks on Amazon.com.

Thanks,

Paul Pinkston

hello paul:
I have 4 of the study sticks. I like the detail and progression of the sticks. They are not made of basswood, they are made of resin. I bought two of Enlows's rought outs at the carvers roundup in Branson, they were ok to. Now all I have to do is make them look like he makes em look. LOL.

I have 3 of em, and they are OK. Gives ya some good ideas of what to do. If I may also suggest Steve Brown's Carving a face study stick Dvd. It is really good. And no I am not affiliated hehe, I just own it and helped me a ton.

I have the Santa head study and it is very helpful. I wonder what the Amazon critics mean by "Quality" of the sticks? They are a resin which if you don't bang them around or drop them will last a lifetime. And the quality of the details in the casts are excellent.

They are another great tool to help carvers starting out or expanding their carving horizons.

Good luck with your carving adventure.

I do not own any but the carving club has the older Enlow Santa study stick and I used it as a go by. In my opinion it was very helpful in fact my wife claimed that Santa and said it was the best one I had ever done.

You too?...

Enlow did a superb job on the study sticks. But I think the Ugly Face stick is the thinnest of them all on the front part. My idea (or suggestion) is to drill a hole in the base and inject some kind of liquid plastic to reinforce the front from the inside

I bought several and was disappointed by the quality.

The study sticks don't match the step- by- step progression listed in the accompanying booklets. Some, not all, of the ones I received were seamed from two pieces. The joints were poor and some of the details were destroyed at the seam. (If you have ever worked with green-ware in pottery, it looked as if someone had taken their finger and smoothed out the joint before firing the pottery.)

I also had resin droplets in some of the finer details - almost like fuzzies from poor quality cuts - that had to be removed from the study sticks.

Overall, I am grateful that I have them. I enjoy the scale and the details where it wasn't smudged up. But don't count on the study stick steps to match perfectly with the instructional booklet and don't count on all the seam detail to be present.
