More than likely, all they may need to get you going is a good honing. Most of the HT tools I've purchased were needing that. As you go along, you may want to change the bevel angle as needed.

I love Henry Taylor Tools. Good old English steel. I sent them off to Rick Ferry at Little Shavers and they come back razor sharp and I can maintain them with my buffer.

I have had mixed results with Henry Taylor tools... I bought a 3/4" #4 gouge years ago and it always developes a bur in the exact same spot no matter how much I polish it, sharpen it....it makes a scratch in the wood when I am trying to put a finish on it so I don't use this gouge for finish work anymore. I also bought a small narrow angle V tool and it would chip in exactly the same spot every time I used it. I wrote to Henry Taylor and they sent me a new one....but it does the exact same thing. I finally got rid of the small V altogether.

I bought a very large narrow angle V tool and it's to die for. I love it. Never had a problem with it. But that's one out of 3 tools. Not a great average. I like Swiss Made best and old Henkels gouges. Unfortunately, Henkels hasn't made gouges in many years. Good luck finding an old one here and there.

I have most Henry Taylor tools made and have used them well over 30 years. I would need to see the edge most time Henry Taylor tools do require trueing up and honing both.

Henry Taylors are good tools.... once they have been properly beveled and sharpened. I could only achieve favorable results by sending all of mine to Rick Ferry at Little Shavers and have him professionally sharpen them. After that, it's just a matter of honeing.

There are multiple threads in the TOOLS forum about Henry Taylor. You can use the search function and get lots of threads on these tools and sharpening.

Also, see similar threads in the box below. The WCI site has a function that will link to similar titled threads.

I really like the Henry Taylor tools that I have, but you really need to be able to tune and sharpen - in other words, they are not 'beginner friendly'.
