Smile Help!! New to woodcarving!

Hi all,

I'm not going to be the woodcarver in my family, but my wonderful husband has always wanted to it and now he has some time on his hands due to an injury. I want to get him the basics for father's day. I know I'm a procrastinator!! Unfortunately I don't have a ton of money to spend on everything. I want to know what basic tools he will need and what kind of wood to get. He just wants to practice first, but his ultimate goal is to make his own chess set so he can teach our son how to play chess! Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Minna

For my money I'd go to Little Shavers web site and look at the biginners kit. It's everything he'll need to get started. It includes a knife, several gouges, a glove, a sharpening strop, and they all come sharp and ready to go to work.

Once more if you buy the tools from them, they will sharpen them for you free if you ever need that done.

You can get their phone number off the website and they can ship the stuff out today.

3rd that. A couple new, young carvers in our club have each got this set and it is well worth the cost. Did not cost to much for the whole deal. Good luck and as always....

The kit from littleshavers would be excellent for carving a chess set. You will also want some basswood for carving, but just to practice a little he could find some branches to practice with the tools. You can get the wood here Heinecke Wood Products. I would get practice sticks - 1x1x12 - excellent for chess pieces.

Hi Minna,
Welcome to the forum!

I just got off vacation and see that I missed the Father's Day deadline for this post, but wanted to add another recommendation for Little Shavers and Heinecke Wood Products. I have used both of them and they have provided high quality products every time.

Hope your husband is able to recover and enjoys the wood carving. It is a great hobby that can become very addictive.

Adam
