I just started carving last month and wanted to do everything with a few simple tools i.e. a fixed blade knife (longer than most carving knives) and a spoon knife, I want to do this simply because I'm a backpacker and want to be able to do my carving in the woods and only carry one extra tool besides the full tang knife I always carry. I also like the thought of making a lot using very little kinda like that old timer who carves everything with a pocket knife, all this for no other reason than liking the idea of it. I should say I'm mostly carving bowls and spoons ect. Last edited by bmwrider; 08-09-2009 at 04:09 PM. |

With a little practice Rider, you should be able to carve just about anything, and you have to keep those two knives very sharp. Sooner or later you will have to pop for one of those backpack frames from the 50's, and then you will be able to carry around a toolbox full of your favorite gouges, and v-tools, and all of the tools that carvers seem to think that they have to have. carve safe, TOM |

Hi Bmwrider, Have you seen the Flexcut Carving Jack? It comes in Left or Right handed versions. It has a multiple of blades and gouges in a folding "knife type" design. A lot of hiking, backpackers that carve carry them. Wanda

I'll second Wanda's suggestion on the Flexcut Carvin's Jack. I take it with me everywhere I go. In fact, in the morning I'll have it with me whittlin' away while I wait for my car to have some belts and hoses changed at Goodyear. It's got everything a carver needs, blade, gouge, V-tool, scorp, chisel...etc..

I like an X-Acto knife when it comes to portability. #11 blades, when one gets dull or you knock the tip off of it....pop in a new replacement, super sharp ready to go...turn the blade around and slip it into the handle point first for safety...there ya go!! jerry |

Hi, 'rider. Welcome to the forum. Take a look at Dave Brock's site. He's hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, the Appalachian Trail, and is also a wood carver. Perhaps what he carries with him might help you... Wood Trails Claude |
