Default Help me decide?

Hi everyone im in need on help deciding what i should get to get started on carving. Im thinking of purchasing the beginners carving kit from littleshavers.com or just starting out with a multi blade pocketknife. I like how the kit comes with everything and info on how to use but the pocketknife is more easily obtainable. Any suggestions?

The palm tools are gouges and are used to make cuts in shapes you cannot make with the knife.

You can pay the same price for the kit from Little Shavers as you can for a good knife. There is absolutly nothing wrong with that knife that comes with the kit. I taught both my grandsons to carve with that knife and they still use it today. As for what are the chisels used for when you see them they are self explanitory. Just make sure you wear the glove it will save you many trips to the hospital for stitches.

Quark,

I agree with everyone else, get the kit and have fun. One of the biggest discouragments to new carvers is starting with inadequate tools. They give up thinking that it is them in reality it is the tools. They do not have to be the most expensive tools, they just have to work and this kit will work.

Safe Carving and God Bless,

Mark

Another kit vote, though I don't have experience with that particular one. My vote is really just a "don't get a multi blade pocket knife to learn to carve" vote. Most pocket knives come very dull and really aren't good carving knife profiles anyway. Plus the hinged blades force you to develop a technique to avoid closing them (and don't trust locking ones) that isn't always (ever?) optimum. Once you have learned the basics with true carving knives, I think it is a good idea to carry a knife so you can do a little whittling when you have a chance.

I would even recommend a box cutter over most pocket knives for learning to carve.
