Exclamation Hello from Veracruz,Mexico!!

Hi you fellows, my name is Gabriel and IŽm from the state of Veracruz in Mexico, IŽam a newbie in the carving stuff and I wonder if you can help, what tools are the best to get into the woodcarving bussines, I love the sea, and I love the fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, so I want to learn how to carve and IŽll like to carve some fish i use to catch ( barracuda, snook, snapper, tarpon, etc) I made a little tarpon plate, but i did it with the Variable Speed MultiPro Rotary Tool.

So, if you please help me with this IŽll be very happy to read your advices for the best tools for the beginner, THANKS!!!! ( hope you understand my english some times is not good hehe )

I would say a very basic answer for your basic question would be based on carving soft wood (basswood for instance) I would recommend a knife and a few basic gouges. If your carving size was in smaller than 20 inches I would use palm size gouges although any size would work. What ever you use for tools remember and apply the word SHARP! You must have equipment to sharpen your tools. This is how I started and my tools choices have grown from there. It doesn't really take much more than a knife to do carving. Just jump in and start.

Have fun
Bob

Back in 1999 I was in Vera Cruz with a bunch of other nuts on GoldWings from Kansas. It was fun in your interesting city. Met Old man Malcom Forbes while there.
