You dont say whether your a experienced carver or not or the age of the kids .. this is important ..

To take on such a task will require a experience carver to teach the kids safety and know how to sharpen ..

Anytime you put a knife in hands of inexperiened kids .. you will need someone that is experienced to watch and teach them ..

Why not start off with maybe soap to shape and carve .. let us know what you have available to you

you dont mention the age of the kids involved-- but as you are well aware its from 9-10 or so up to 18. the very young ones dont have the strength or hand size for most tools-- unless u do soap carving with them-- do a search in the search bar-- i think someone actually made some wooden tools to carve soap with-- the older ones-- have the strength, will each student have his own tools or will u or the club supply them? look at ricks "little shavers" for a good starter set and also some projects to start them with.

good luck-- in that this isnt a recognized 4H project-- you get to write ur own program. i did that will bee keeping in missouri-- its become a fairly good program here.

Welcome to the site.

I changed the title a bit to allow the site to reference other posts with the same subject. Look at the box at the bottom of the page with links to posts with similiar titles. You can also search using "teaching kids". Also try "Soap carving" in a search.

There are two things that must be stressed and they are related: Safety and Sharp tools. Wear a glove and understand what a "sharp" tool is.

I'd really recommend that you find someone that's an experienced carver to help.

Good luck.

hi Joanne, I would carve of youngsters to use some blocks of clay. In the long life of my carving, I would never carve with knives and Soap.
