For the little animals you can use basswood. It's usually very eay to carve and you can put in as much detail as you want. I'm not sure about the ring.

Both "Little Shavers" and "Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers" have beginner's sets. Check them out on the web and if their site doesn't answer your questions give them a call. Their customer service is excellent. They won't sell you more than you need to do what you want.

My apology for the previous post. I was trying to be fancy and do a simple cut and paste of names and URL's but the Cyber God's didn't offer much help. I'm not quite sure where all that came from because all I really wanted to post was my last paragraph!

To make a ring ... drill the inside hole for the finger first, to fit. Then cut out the ring outside dimension on a scroll saw or band saw. Crave the corners off snf round, sand well and engrave in a design. As for wood type, a good dense hardwood would be best, wouldn't crack to split as easy. Suggestion, cut out a few to practice with, various woods, and see what you can come up with, try laminating a couple thin woods together for interesting effects. I'll be curious to see what you manage to create. Bob

Whittling is a wonderful hobby and you can do most anything with a knife to get a great effect ... I myself almost whittle exclusively .. most everything I create is with only a knife .. and small animals and figures are wonderful to do .. May I suggest a wonderful book you can find on e-bay and amazon is entitled "Whittling by Bill Higginbotham " .. It is a excellant book full of projects for the whitttler .. From animals to figures .. it is excellent .. Here are 2 figures you can look at that are done with only a knife in what is known as flat plane carving .. Good Luck Gene |
