Default Hand Protection

I'm making my first post today in hopes that someone will learn from my mistake. I normally wear a kevlar glove on my non-knife hand while carving. The other day I picked up a half finished project to make a few cuts. I didn't plan on carving long so I didn't put on my glove. Well, I hit a hard spot in the wood and applied a little pressure on the knife, the wood chipped out and I buried the blade in my index finger. If I would have just taken the time to put on my glove, I could have avoided a trip to the hospital to have my finger stitched up. My advice to all beginning carvers is to ALWAYS WEAR HAND PROTECTION.

Sorry to hear about your learning experience there, badwood. I've been fortunate. My learning experiences haven't included a trip to the emergency room.

People sometimes ask me about the glove and thumb guard. I tell them, "I've never cut myself when wearing these." I let them imagine what's happened when I've failed to put the things on.

You know, I used to think all cuts felt the same like a sharp stinging sensation when you broke the skin. Since I started carving I have learned some also feel like really bad bruises after the sting stops.
