I stop cut all the way around then cut in from the head to the hat but not real deep

Kathy - I'm assuming you are talking about hat with a down-turned brim, like floppy or well worn hat? Then is your stop cut up at an angle into the hat? Nope - not getting it yet. Would you please explain a little more?
Brandant, said it best I would suggest you follow his directions they are much better than mine. It's like I know how to do it, but discribing it is another thing. I hope that you will share your carving with us when you get it finished.
