On basswood caricatures lately I've been running into a problem when the grain direction converges or goes two directions in one spot.(if that makes sense) If you carve in one direction it catches and if you carve in the other direction it also catches as if you were carving in the wrong direction both ways. It mostly happens when trying to carve a bump or hump in the wood. What's the solution if any? I've just made a wedge like cut instead of a smooth bump or hump curve.
I am working on a cane right now that does that in the knots, I take short small cuts from each direction the wood will allow without chipping and if I get a very small chip in the very middle between the two directions, I will go crossways like was earlier suggested and then sand, sand sand ha ha......................Dave - You know they have those signs on the freeway that say the same thing "Grain change" veer left LOL and whattaya mean it says "lane change" I don't change lanes when I am carving!
