Try "Landscapes in Relief" by Lora S. Irish, available here at Fox Chapel. A good place to start. Bob

Ramin, Have you done any carving before? The reason that I ask is because you may want a book that gives a good overview of everything that goes along with carving. Such as all the forms of carving, sharpening, finishing, painting, tool info, wood info, etc... I would suggest a book called "The Complete Book of Woodcarving" by Everett Ellenwood. It has really helped me tremendously. It also has a good beginner relief carving step by step project. If you have done some carving and found that you really like relief carving then just ignore me and go with Bob's suggestion. I don't have the pleasure of owning "Landscapes in Relief", but you can't go wrong with a Lora Irish book! She is wonderful! |

Chris Pye's book on relief carving is about as detailed and exhaustive as there is. He also has a great website for general carving information as well as a for-pay membership website and several instructional DVDs. I am a confirmed fan of his carvings, writings and DVDs. Other than that I have no affiliation. |

Good recommendations all If your thinking of relief carving animals then Lora Irish 'Wildlife Carving in Relief' is really good. As mentioned you can order though this site by going to Fox Chapel Publishing. This book lays out the various depths by number that you need to achieve to get the dimentional look. It's just chocked full of information and instruction. I carved my first buffalo by following her instruction from this book as a beginning carver.
