All those suggestions look good. The professional woodcarver/furniture builder who is mentoring me (just retired, actually) got all of his walnut from a tree service. His supply lasted him for over 15 years - he had 3 trees!

You may be able to find wood from a furniture builder nearby. I have picked up hardwood slabs and scraps, as well as aspen logs from furniture builders. Sure can't beat the price - I get this stuff out of their barrels at the end of the day for free. Sometimes they just leave stuff out and assume that people will just take the scraps - other times it's good to ask first. These guys have liability issues with people rummaging through their "trash". The aspen slabs are great for relief carving...

Tuckaway Timber is another good source for northern-grown basswood and butternut. They have an ad in the current issue of WCI, page 95. They're really helpful and will size a piece for you to your dimensions.

http://www.joescarvingwood.com/ is also a good supplier in Northern Minnesota. I know of him and have heard good reports on him. I have emailed back and forth with him a few times and seems like a very nice fellow. I have not used him but then I have basswood right out my back door. Good luck with your search

Yep, some of us is just lucky like that. I have been carving for four years and still haven't bought any wood.
