My advice would be to make sure you also buy a carving glove to protect yourself from serious cuts. Carving sticks can be very dangerous as your hand usually holds the stick you're pushing the sharp blades into. Please invest the relatively small purchase amount of the glove to avoid a very expensive and time consuming trip to the ER.

Then, have a great adventure in carving.

Unless you are wanting to do chip carving I would not purchase the knife you listed. Myself I would purchase a beginner carving set from Little Shavers and maybe an additional detail knife. I bought the Start-up Kit and added a Murphy's detail knife a few weeks ago and I'm very happy with the tools/etc. But either the Beginner's kit or the Start-up kit would be the way I would go.

Welcome to the forum!

I agree with OH&T. I have that book, and it does have a lot of details about carving. But...I think there are lots of cuts you won't be able to do with the knife you indicated, and you're liable to get extremely frustrated. If you absolutely have to have a pocket knife, that probably the Flexcut Carvin' Jack would be a much better buy for you. It has some gouges that could do a lot of the cuts needed in the book.

As to the Beginner's Kit from Little Shaver's Beginner's Carving Set at Little Shavers Rick provides good fast service and the tools are extremely sharp when you receive them. The price is a bargain, as well, considering the effort he puts into them sharpening them.

The folding knife at Woodcraft comes so dull, don't waste your time or money. If I were you I also would order the kit at Little Shavers.

I have to agree with the others. If you are interested in caricature carving. The pocket knife you are talking about is not the knife for you.

as to the carvin jack-- you can order several beginner sets for the cost of one carving jack-- and you'll be much happier with the beginner set.

You may also want to get a leather thumb guard to wear on your hand that holds the knife. It will help reduce the severity of nicks that you get on your finger while carving.

I use Flexcut Knives as well as anything that suits my needs for a particular cut. However, Lee Ferguson sells some good knives for the price.
