Default A Gods-ly project?

I really love the old representations of the Norse Gods and Goddesses and am thinking of carving a set for myself. I have 2 in bronze, my patron Odhinn and his wife Frigga, but I would love to be able to make my own. The figures I have are on this page - Gods1

Do you think I'm trying to run before I can walk here? I've only been carving for just over a week Any tips for me?

That is kinda running before you can walk. I worry about it turning out to difficult then you being discouraged and decide to no longer carve.

But I am also a beginnner so take my advice with a grain of salt....

OK! I say take it on! Bang a gong and get it on! I am a bite it all off kind of gal. Try it. You can also try some power tools. I really like this idea, I am in the process of looking for a Brigid to carve for myself. keep an eye out would ya? This is a great idea. Congratulations. Don't be worried about it. You can always start and put him down for a bit then pick him back up at a later date. Go for it! I am really looking forward to what you come up with!

i agree strongly with keoma...dont be worried if this is difficult or not, or you carve just a week or 100 years...if you like it, and wish to carve it, just start and do it. thats what i do all the time.... and, if you meet a difficulty while carving, just pop your question here, and we are all here to help... you will see, YOU CAN DO IT :-) yeah ! go for it now !

By all means, DO IT!!! You'll never find out what you "can't" do until you play with something that you "might-be-able" to do.
One word of advice...Don't be overly critical of yourself if you try to make a duplicate of the castings you have. What you "see" as a mistake may actually be an improvement that others will approve of.
Good luck and let us see the results.

Think on the oldest cave drawings and carvings that have been salvaged from Viking digs. None of them were masterpieces. Rudimentary tools, no art schooling, a basic idea, and an urge to create. Sound familiar? You're going to do an awesome job!

Aw, thanks everyone

Keoma, I have a dremel-type tool and a whole load of bits including a selection of diamond tips. I only ever used about 3 types, when I was carving runes into gemstones so the rest are pretty pristine.

Hey Rafe -

Yeah - I agree with folks here. Go for it! You've got a can do spirit and attitude from what I can tell and so even if you don't quite get it to where you want it, you can set it aside and try again. No biggie - it's only wood.

I've been thinking, maybe I should try a slightly simpler as my first carving in the round I've done knotwork and faces but never something with a body! So how about this?

Now, there is (of course ) one problem. I only have this image. Can anyone give me a hint as to how to do the back?

Oh, the pic is a drawing of a Viking-era chesspiece. I don't know which piece it represented but it's a Berserker as can be seen by him biting the edge of his shield - a common sign that the berserk frenzy was about to overwhelm him
