| | glueing up basswood
Hi everyone
I would like some do,s and do nots on gluing up basswood to make it thicker to fit patterns? What kind of glue? (usualley a larger area than fixing a oops) like about 20 or25 sq inches. Any tips on getting the grain lined up ect. Will appreciate all feedback.
Have a nice day Lee |

| | Re: glueing up basswood I plane both sides to be joined so they are as near perfectly flat as possible and then use yellow glue and plenty of clamps. Works for me. Hope this helps.

| | Re: glueing up basswood Wchips,,as Doug said so well,,as long as the surfaces are perfectly flat most any glue will work just fine.Bass is so forgiving these glue ups are usually good . Use plenty of clamps and you'll be just fine.Again,,as with any glue up,,the better the surfaces the better the results. |

| | Re: glueing up basswood Hi Lee,
I have only been a member of this forum for a short time now but one of the most useful tips I learned from someone right here on this site, was that when gluing up more than two thickness of wood ( I recently had glued three boards together and it wasn't fun) Do only two pieces at a time. In other words, instead of trying to glue all three pieces together at once, like I did, only glue the first two together, let them set up good and then glue the third piece on to the first two. Trying to clamp 3 glue-slippery pieces together is frustrating because the piece in the middle keeps sliding all over and won't stay lined up with the outer pieces..... It would seem obvious to most folks, but it had to be pointed out to me.....
This was a tip I will use often in the future and I hope it helps you.

| | Re: glueing up basswood This might seem like a dumb question, but what do you do about the glue that comes out after you clamp it.? Don't you wipe it off right then, or do you wait until it sets and try and get it off.. It seems that Curtis had to wipe it off then. Charltotte |

| | Re: glueing up basswood If you're gluing a block to carve the squeeze out won't matter too much,,you can just chip or scrape it off later,or wipe it off as you're done clamping. The only time it does matter is when this will be the final finish as in boards used for a table top or where a finish will go. The squeeze out won't create a seam, the only seam or parting line will show up if the pieces weren't prepped properly.Other than that I usually ignore them and carve right through it.On thin glue ups ,wiping too soon with a damp cloth can compromise the joint, but on bigger blocks it won't matter too much. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
