Hey all. Been looking at getting a folding pocket knife. I have a Carving Jack and do like it but I find that it is not very comfortable for long sessions. Was wondering which one you guys use? I know that many of them do not lock and this is a concern. Safety is always big on my list. I take too many blood thinners for it not to be. How do you keep the thing from folding in on you if it does not lock? I mean, people have been using non locking knives for ages so I'm just guessing it is more simpler then I think.... Michael |

When it says "slip joint" does this mean that it is a non locking folder? Take this one for example: A.G. Russell Knives | Böker® Congress Carver Michael |

Slip Joint A term that is used for ordinary folding knives that do not lock. It is in their glossary A.G. Russell Knives | Glossary: S - A.G. RussellNice knife. I haven't seen it before... Gilles |

I have only folding knives that don't lock and have never had one fold up on me....... 60+ years of whittlin'. I can't say that there is a secret...just using common sense and being careful. Way back I had an Official Cub Scout knife that had the side push locks, and even then I thought it was a pain in the but......not the fingers. No doubt the lock backs are safer, but I wouldn't be too concerned if you have a good solid slip joint folder. Personal opinion is that folks who have had a folder close up on them, probably had a cheap inferior knife and the blade was not secured in the bolster and tended to wobble side to side. This would tend to allow the handle to twist in your hand enough to let the blade close. Or it was just plain carelessness. Pushing really hard into the stock can also result in a blade closing up on you when it binds and rolls.....again; poor practice. Al |

Get a Ross Oar kmife. They lock in place.

Michael, I do have an old pocket knife that I use some (and plan to use more once I can get it razor-sharp), and I'm not too worried about it folding up on my fingers, primarily because I wear working gloves when I carve or whittle. I feel like the glove will keep my finger from getting cut if the blade should happen to fold in on me. Stephen |

Some folks use the Rough Riders, I have a couple. The Oar is on my wish list. Dave |

Michael, I wouldn't worry so much about it folding up while carving, but be very careful when sharpening, as the pressure is going away from the cutting edge, and has more of a tendency to cause the blade to close. Especially if you are using power equipment to sharpen with. Work safe, Tom |

Hi Michael, I have had a pocket knife fold on me and it was a bad cut. This was many years ago and I was doing something that was not smart when it happened. If u want to b on the safe side get one that locks. If u can get by with a fixed blade, they are alot more comfortable. Carl
