Default First work

The first are traditional kabuki warriors , are made with really cheap knife and surgical scalpel, obeche wood.

The second are a celtic knots the irregularity of dimension are intentional, the tools are flexcut knife and gouges, obeche wood.

Finishing with wax

Frencesco,
Thank you for sharing your carvings with us. How long have you been carving? And do you mostly carve relief? Is the wood you mentioned using hard--it looks somewhat like mahogany.

I've only been on this site for a little over a year and that's the most thorough detailing of wood description I have seen yet. Well done on your carvings. Hope to see more of your carvings in the future.

Welcome aboard Francesco. Looks like you're off to a good start. I found the Ghanaian description of the Obeche wood amusing. "Having lived in Ghana for several years the term "Wawa" was a derogatory description applied to all things African by non-Africans. It stands for "West African Wins Again." Personally, I loved the "African Experience". Our youngest son was born there!

We collected a number of woodcarvings while in Ghana and the two most prominent types of wood used were "Odum" which is very similar to Butternut, and "African Walnut" which is similar to it's American cousin in grain but much more reddish in color.

Nice work on the Celtic knot, they are a favorite of mine. Looking forward to seeing more of your efforts in the future.
