| | First woodspirit staff /2005 Not sure what this wood is. I cut it down with some others like it but this one was totally dry under the bark. It's about5'8" tall and 2.5 around at the top, of the carving. Very light weight wood but reall strong. The bark came off easy and the wood is a warm brown color with grain that looks like birch but this carves better than birch and takes detail great! Under the bark the first "skin" that came off with the bark was bright or deep orange that reminds me of Sassafrass but no oder at all. It may be RED ELM but I'm lost without leaves, Lol.

| | Re: First woodspirit staff /2005 Outstanding stck Mike.
May I make a suggestion on your eyes. I learned the hard way and other told me also, so don't feel bad. Make your eyes not straight on but looking to either side. As my wife told me and a few local carvers, they looked like they were on something. I admire those who can carve realistic eyes. But over all,I like your walking staff. I have carved many with Eagle top for Eagle Scout when the achive that rank in Boy Scouts, Mine are also the 5'8" to 6' long. Started carving Indian themes in mine as a lot of the Scouting programs are Indian in nature.
Again, outstanding and thanks for sharing you work. |

| | Re: First woodspirit staff /2005 Kenny, For some reason he looks like he is looking straight on in this picture but he is really looking down and the eyes are dark green. I'm not a good photographer at all,Lol.

Well done!

| | Re: First woodspirit staff /2005 Mike and outstanding stick with tons of character. Cant help you out on the wood maybe if I could see it up close. But then again maybe not if it doesnt grow in this area. Really good job I dont mind the eyes I almost never have my eyes looking straight ahead and as you said the camera nevers gives it justice. I find that a lot even with carvings I do that I really like when I see the photo without the proper lighting they look pretty bad. Nice job
