Hi All,

Today I spent the day in a class to learn how to do bark carving We all worked on Wood Spirits and I couldn't believe how much fun it was to work with bark! It is so soft and easy to work with that I was truly amazed I was expecting this to be something that would be hard to work with!

So my only problem now is that I have found 3 ways of carving that I enjoy, too bad retirement is so far away, work is definately going to be taking valuable time away from carving! :-/

Welcome to the world of bark carving I agree it is such a great medium to work with. Looked for the picture of your woodspirit but didnt see one posted. Let us see it when it is finished. That also makes for a good woodcarver willing to try any type of carving. I am the same I like to try everything but my comfort zone is woodspirits.

Hi Colin,

I took some pictures last night and as soon as I have the film developed I will get the pictures posted.

I have to admit that I find half of the fun in carving is experimenting with different wood and different styles. I've started another wood spirit, this one is for my sister who loves this type of carving, and I hope to have him done sometime today so he'll be included on the film as well.

for you. Do you name each of your wood spirits as well as number them? The instructor I had yesterday names all of her carvings so although my first one is named, I'm not sure about naming the rest?

Most of the time, my carings are named. However, if it is a repeat like my rose pins or dove pins, no, unless you want to call the rose yellow rose, wine rose, red rose and the same with the dove pins, oak, walnut. . Now my walking canes and staffs, yes, the wood spirits carved in them are named. I like the Mountain Man type names like Zeb,Zeke, Jeremiah, Nate, The Preacher, War Eagle, Grey Eagle, Buffalo Man, etc.

Most of the time I do not name my carvings simply because I like for the new owners to name them. Usually they have a name that they like or if they ask me I will suggest one for them. Most of the time I will suggest a mythalogical name such as Zim or Zorgo, Shep etc something whimsical. I do however number them and sign each carving. I find that people want you to sign them anyway and to burn it into the carving is better it wont wear off. You will find that it is hard to come up with a name for every carving when you carve as many as I do. Look forward to seeing your woodspirit

Thank you for your help! My Wood Spirits will have names.

Colin, I do make sure I woodburn in my signature and date on all my carvings, but I do thank you for the suggestion.

Okay the new pictures are up on the site now. The Wood Spirits are in their own category, they were done on Black Poplar Bark and I have also just added my first relief carving under the 'Carvings' album.

nice woodspirits and i like the idea you give them names.i don't name any of my carvings i leave that to whoever adopts them.

You did extreamly well on your first woodspirit they are a whole pile of fun to carve. Thanks for sharing them with us be careful you can be hooked on these fellows really easy.

Thanks everyone! I really enjoyed working on them. I have a 3rd one finished and will take a picture of it soon. Colin, unfortunately your warning came just a teensy bit late : , I'm already hooked.

Well I'm off to Nelson, BC for a couple of days, I get a chance to meet Dave & Tammy Francis on Wednesday in Castlegar and am quite looking forward to that as well.
