Default First try with the bandsaw

I mentioned in an earlier post that I had found a used bandsaw. Although I had never used a bandsaw, I watched Gene's video on blocking and the vid made it simple and painless. My previous practice has been on 4" blocks and I wanted to try something larger so I cut out 2 of Harold Enlow's hill people from his 8-10" patterns. I wasn't able to make mine look similar to the ones in the book but the saw really saves a lot of wear and time with the knife.

You're right about saving time, a ton of time. Nice carvings and painting.

You are right Blue, The bandsaw is my number one tool in the shop, followed by my belt sander for making knives.

Woodcraft of Spokane told me that the bandsaw is the second most dangerous tool in your shop, SO BE CAREFUL.

I echo the warning to be careful with the bandsaw. i also advise to leave some wood around the pattern for adjustment to the carving, if you tke off too much when making the cut-out, you are stuck with it. Enjoy your new tool, they are great to have.

Thanks for all the good advice. I learned the hard way about careful and started off with 13 stitches, courtesy of the knife. Your advice about taking off too much happened as well with the woman. I cut her leg separation too deep and had to shorten her dress. I'm gradually learning what NOT to do.

Lov’em Blusteel and thanks for pointing out Gene’s blocking out on the band saw video. I’ll be checking it out.

I also just purchased Harold Enlow’s book on carving caricatures and now have my cap set to attempt his Missouri Mule. It will be my first blocking out on the band saw so the video will be a big help. Waiting now for a Timber Wolf 3/16 x 4 TPI blade to arrive to start.

Again, love the hill couple.

You take care with those extremities Blu.

My Craftsman 12", 1hp band saw is the largest carving tool I own.
Nothing removes waste like a band saw <g>.

...Plus it's handy for other wood working projects & chores as well.

That's a handsome couple. The shortened dress works too. When you have legs like that, why not show them off!
Good Job
