Default first timer

I never carved anything before so my first project may be too much for me. I have a pine tree in my back yard that was cut off to about 12 ft. I thought it would make a good totem pole.

Dollar Bill:
Welcome to the forum. What diameter is the pole? That may suggest choices for figures.
What are your heritage icons? Any recurring figures?
Get the bark off that pole ASAP. The bugs love the juicy wood just inside the bark.

Good idea to cut a slot/groove/channel in the "bad" side, right to the center. Nobody sees poles from the back, the opening helps to relieve the stresses of drying.

Have at it. Fire up the saws to rough it out and have fun. Go big. Be safe.

the pole is about 8 inches diameter. I want to figure out the best way to carve it before I start. I dont know if I should wait a while or start while it's still green.
