Default First Project - Whimsey

Well I just started my first project a few days ago. I decided to make a quick ball in cage. The top part was just some practice designs to get me accustomed to the knife.

I must say that carving from a 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 block is quite challenging. In the future i will be sure to buy the 1 x 1 blocks

Tell me what you think so far. I haven't completed it just yet, its a work in progress.

Looks great so far! Is that a cubeoctahedron (14 faces) on top?

Looks like a great start. Learn how to keep your knife sharp, and keep the chips flyin.

Carve safe, Tom

Thanks guys. Its shaping up to be a nice little carving. I plan on adding at least one chain link on the bottom to finish it off. Thats why the cage is so small. It was alot of fun trying to get my knife in there. Hahah

Does anyone have a very small project i could complete. Most of the tutorials and videos i see are of larger carving. I have 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 blocks of wood so doing most of gene's videos seem quite hard with the off proportions.

Any help would be appreciated

You're on a great start there.

1 1/2" x 1 1/2" is what I use for Gene's little men.

Great first carving! I like the little cube on top, the caged ball and your idea of including a chain in the bottom portion... Great start so keep it up and besure and post a few photos of it when you're finished it, we'd enjoy seeing it! Keep the chips flying and safe carving to you!!!

I mentioned this elsewhere but I am having fun with Jack Price's book "Carving Small Characters". It is a true beginner's book and he works with roughly 1" x 1" x 2" pieces of basswood. There's a lot of good info and he explains things so well even I can follow the intructions.
