Default First Project-Gene Messer's Black Bear

During my RV the trip west I have been viewing a copy of Gene Messer's instructional videos from a DVD that Bob T put together and made available.

A stop over at Smoky Mountain Wood Carver Supply yielded a new Denny knife, a great starter book, four practice sticks and a quick lesson on carving and stropping from Mac. Before starting on the trip, I had previously bought a starter kit from Little Shavers. It is a nice kit, but I wanted a larger knife and Mac suggested a good value Denny knife.

My last week of RV travel from West Chester, PA to Mesa, AZ, was spent in warm and beautiful San Carlos, Sonora, Mx. We just arrived in Mesa, AZ, today. I could not wait until I got back to the states. What better time to start a carving project than on vacation?

During the very hot afternoons, siesta time, in the air conditioned confort of the RV I broke out one of the practice sticks and started on Gene Messer's cute black bear. It is turning out surprisingly good for a first project. I broke off the end of one of his feet in an overly agressive cross grain cut. Ever see a bear with a peg leg? I'll have to ask Gene how to carve an eye patch!

It is fun and interesting to see the little bear take shape out of a piece of wood. This may be addictive!

Have fun John! I love the Denny knives. Great steel and keep a keen edge. Keep that Murphy knife though from the LS set, those are good knives as well. Can't wait to see your finished figure.

John, I can relate. I just cut the foot off one of my "little dudes" the other day. FWIW, I have thoughts about making him into a pirate too! I bet lots of folks - at least beginners like us - have had the same experience and the same thought.

Definitely post a picture!

John .. dont be discouraged .. a little glue a you can piece it back together or whittle another foot and glue it on .. thats thw wonderful thing about wood .. it can be duplicated ..
