Hi! My name is Michiel and I love whittling. I'm new to this forum, but I've been watching it for a time now. I know a lot of people will dissagre, but I like a convex edge on my knives. Anybody else use a convex grind and what are the benefits of othe grinds used? Thanks a lot fot this great forum. Michiel |

assuming you mean convex and not concave like a straight razor....I prefer a straight grind...when you are making a cut with a secondary bevel which is basically what a convex grind is....you have to keep tilting your knife to keep the cutting edge in contact with the wood......don't care for it. too many things to do for a one track mind lol

Michiel, Welcome, and believe me when I say, "what works for you is fine". I have seen people carving things as small as a pill, with a pocket knife. And in some earlier life, in some nasty place on this earth I watched someone carve a small elephant using a machete. We've even got a member of this board, who I consider one of the best carvers I have ever seen, use a box cutter. So carve on and pay little attention to those who might say, "you're carving with a what"? Tom H

I agree with "whatever works". A knife with a concave secondary bevel will act much like a chisel. Why not?

I prefer flat grinds myself, but have some convex's and a concave or two.

Just remember to wear your steel toe shoes! If you can remove wood with dynamite, that works too. More serious, just have fun, bottom line! Bob |
