Default First post and a question about grinds

Hi! My name is Michiel and I love whittling. I'm new to this forum, but I've been watching it for a time now.

I know a lot of people will dissagre, but I like a convex edge on my knives. Anybody else use a convex grind and what are the benefits of othe grinds used?

Thanks a lot fot this great forum.

Michiel

assuming you mean convex and not concave like a straight razor....I prefer a straight grind...when you are making a cut with a secondary bevel which is basically what a convex grind is....you have to keep tilting your knife to keep the cutting edge in contact with the wood......don't care for it. too many things to do for a one track mind lol

Michiel, Welcome, and believe me when I say, "what works for you is fine". I have seen people carving things as small as a pill, with a pocket knife. And in some earlier life, in some nasty place on this earth I watched someone carve a small elephant using a machete. We've even got a member of this board, who I consider one of the best carvers I have ever seen, use a box cutter. So carve on and pay little attention to those who might say, "you're carving with a what"? Tom H

I agree with "whatever works". A knife with a concave secondary bevel will act much like a chisel. Why not?

Like most things in life, we can get lost in the technicalities and lose sight of what we are trying to accomplish or what experience teaches us works. From your post, you're doing everything right. Keep on loving it, and don't worry about the rest of us technosnobs.

I prefer flat grinds myself, but have some convex's and a concave or two.

Just remember to wear your steel toe shoes! If you can remove wood with dynamite, that works too.

More serious, just have fun, bottom line!
