Wow! That's a great memory to have Grandpa! Neat ingenuity on the knife! And I noticed Kira seems to have a keen interest in carving also--or is it she's waiting for Octavia to finish--"C'mon already! I wanna go out an' play!" LOL

Shannon, you go right ahead and use the story. She's a great little girl and going to be a great little carver. She's started on a bird now and Grandpa has a second knife carved for her.

Hi Bob, soap carving is really fun to teach children and elder's and I agree your Granddaughter is a natural, she's been watching Grandpie. We use the plastic knives and agree the wooden ones would work much better. At Fair time we have a Children's soap carving contest where we get anywhere from 25-40 children. We just finished a visit to an Adult Care facility where we did soap carving, and that would have been an excellent time to have wooden knives. Which makes me think that would be another good carving club project.
Your Granddaugter is a cutie and I bet she'll cherish her knife Grandpie made for her and her first carving lesson.

Octavia continues to enjoy her carving. I have made a second knife for her and she finds it quite useful for her tiny hands. She having a ball and making lots of soap chips, she's working on making an egg now.

We had young Ryan, my first apprentice, here for his first session yesterday, and it happened that Octavia was also here, so later in the session, she very quietly creeped down the stairs and joined us. She sat in the big arm chair in the corner and carved on her soap while Ryan did some drawing. I think she's encouraged by seeing Ryan's interest in carving too.

This is really fun folks, and gives you such joy to watch the light come on in these little eyes.

That's awesome Bob. I gave my nephew, 7 years old, his first pocketknife. He sharpened every pencil in the house with it. He carries it everywhere that his dad will let him. It's fun to watch them get excited about this stuff.
