Default First carving class this weekend

After more than a year of working with the magazines, I'm taking my first carving class on Saturday. I've been crafting since I was very small, but I'm kinda nervous about carving--I can be a little klutzy, and it's a mystery to me how the shapes got trapped in those blocks of wood. Other than relaxing, wearing a glove, and keeping my tools sharp, do you have any suggestions for me?

Mindy

Just have fun and don't be nervous, and don't get discouraged. Carving is a lot of fun and it's very relaxing and rewarding. Glad you are taking a class...it will really help you get started. When people ask me how I did it I just tell them that I just look at the block of wood and carve away anything that doesn't look like it belongs there! Stay tuned to this forum and don't be afraid to ask questions here. You can get a lot of expert help from everyone here. Good luck with your class and I hope to see you and some photos of your projects here soon!

I like to bring a pencil and small notepad and write down a few notes/reminders. Have a good time!

Mindy, as you said, there are just so many shapes, in so many blocks of wood, that have just been waiting for you & your unique vision to find them. Be patient while carving, the shapes will wait for you and evolve as you ponder. Have a great time.

In addition to the pencil and paper that Eric suggested, I'd add a camera. Cameras "remember" much better than the human brain. Have fun and don't worry about totally finishing in class - you can always get BobD to help you with your homework!

Telling you not to worry is like telling to you not to think of pink elephants, if you say it, it will happen. I echo Claude. I am a very visual person. I want pictures as well as notes. Just remember if there is more than just you in the class, there will be people that you think are good enough to teach the class and there will always be someone worse than you ;oD. Just have fun.
