Lefthand,

Looking good. A knife is all you need, depending upon what you are carving. Many folks here carve mainly with knives and just a gouge or two and a v-tool. If you have found them yet, Gene Messer has alot of easy to follow beginner type videos on you tube as well as Arlene and some other folks from here. A good many can be done with just a knife. Congrats on the first one and thanks for sharing with us.

Safe Carving and God Bless,

Mark

Hello and welcome Lefthand. I think your first carving looks very good. The important part is that you enjoyed the carving time. That's the ticket buddy. Take care. Paul

Ps-buy a glove to go with that knife. Best regards and safe carving.

YUp, nice job. Some of us never use more than a knife. I call myself a whittler on that account
I must protest two things about your post- first is the parentheses around the word carving in your title. You put cutting edge to wood, so its a carving and the parentheses are unnecessary. Second is your claim you have no talent- you do have talent, now you just need more experience. Your first beat my first, I admire your bravery in attempting a face, one of the harder things to pull off for a beginner.
Go get em.

You did very well for your first carving! Keep going and remember, first and foremost - the only person you need to impress is yourself. Keep practicing, you will be amazed how quickly your skills will develop.

You did a very nice job for your first carving, and you will be surprised at how much carving you can do with just a knife. I also think you definitely have some talent there...keep up the good work!

It is a good start. Practice, get a few good carving books, and watch all the videos you can. Joining a club will really help you if there is one in your area. Congrats on becoming a wood carver.
