Default First Ball in a Cage

This is my first attempt at a "Ball in a Cage". Started off not too bad, but the deeper i go into the cut-windows, tis the harder it is to make a decent cut. Wood is basswood. Using mainly an Old Timer 33OT 2-bladed jack knife.

I've probably done about 10-15 of them.....it gets easier. Although, the smaller they get, it does get a bit tedious. Made one for a friend from a 3/8 square piece and I thought I would never finish picking at with the tip of the blade! Yours is looking good!

Thumbs up Re: First Ball in a Cage

Looking good so far and it looks like you're gonna get there. Just take it slow and easy, one chip at a time and you'll have a real conversation piece to show, then you can begin a double-ball in a swirled cage. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Doing balls-in-cages is really what got me started. I still find it fun and a great way to pass time.
...And there is always somebody who would like to have one...

Yours is looking good!
Keep it up & good luck.

Russ

Ball in the cage was my first carving 20yrs ago..and I just sat on the front porch after reading one of E.J. Tangerman's book..whittling and woodcarving..it took me two afternoons and I still have it...How did I know where that lead me done the road of creativity..I have made spoons and santas and more lovespoons and the list is never ending...Bill#1

I can't comment on how you are doing because I haven't done one. But I look forward to seeing your progress so I know how to do one.
