Default Finished Toucan

I found this pattern from one of the sticky's. I'm not sure if I am going to paint it or leave it the way it is. Anyway this was a small block I had from a sample bag of wood that was 2 1/2 high be 1 1/2 wide.

Is this one of your first carvings? you've got a cute bird going here. I wouldn't change a thing on this one. I always tell people to save their first carvings. You will be glad you did. I would start adding more detail to your work, as you feel more comfortable.

Yeah I started this with just a bench knife so it took me some time to get it done. I'm thinking of doing another one, but roughing out the shape and using my new gouges. I was really happy the way this one came out but now that is done I see where I can do things a little different.

Yeah, it does look nice, Gear Dog. Like others have advised in the past, date it and store it so that you can enjoy both the success of a first piece and the growth in your skills and abilities over the years. Keep it up.
