Default Finished First Carving Project

Hello,
I finished my first carving project using butternut.
This dolphin was easy to carve but took time
sanding and finishing but was well worth it.
All comments are welcome.

Bill,
That turned out really nice.
I like the finish it shows the grain very well.

My dad carved only one carving and it was a dolphin also.

Nice looking dolphin, well done. The grain shows the lines off nicely. Nice finish on it too.

Nice job. I think you picked a nice first project. I really like the natural finish. Like others said, I too like to see the grain.

Hi Bronco,
That sure doesn't look like a first project to me. I guess you mean "in butternut" Beautiful finish, clean lines, simplicity in the form, and professional presentation with the base.
Beautiful piece.

Love the subject and the wood you used. Clean and beautiful coloring and grain. Real nice leaving it natural.

Job well done. However, are you sure that was your first? Many carvers have not accomplish that well of a carving their first one.
Thanks for sharing and can't wait till your second one is finished.

You are giving me way too much credit.
I have been carving for two years and this is my first
finished project. I have a whole lot in my drawers I
woul not show anyone. I was able to do a good job
on this project for several reasons.Since it is a stylized
carving I carved out the basic shape then I sanded it
with my dremmel and then finished by hand sanding, this covered
up my mistakes from my knife. This also was a very easy to carve project,I only used a knife and a flat gouge.I finished it with deft rubbing it with a paper
sack between coats. I have several more sea creatures left to finish. I also
am working on a santa and I am not going to sand it,you will see the difference
on my caricatures that I am a beginner. I do appreciate the encourgment this
makes me want to finish the rest of my carvings.
Thanks for listening.
