I have been carving for a while so I'm not sure if this is truly a newby question.

But when it comes to finishing a carving I keep hearing or reading to use boiled linseed oil & sienna, ok beyond that is is a paint color what the heck am I looking for? Oil Base, Water Base? and how much is too much?

boiled linseed oil can be bought at lowes or home depot, then get a tube of burnt seinna oil paint a litte mineral spirits to mix the oil paint in, when you have mixed it up you can dump it in a a clean paint can for storage the mixture of the oil paint is up to you according to how much of a tint you want. or some folks just use straight blo with no tint.

To go a little farther with your question, Some likes Burnt Umber mixed with their BLO. However, Once dried, a coat or two of satin finisf, spray of brush on, then maybe a Feed and Wax , then buffed. Some uses the fFeed and Wax instead of theSatin poly.
