| Hello to everyone, This is my first post and it`s about Fan Carving. I been surfing this fourm a lot but haven`t seen anything about fan carving ( maybe there is something about it here, but I haven`t seen it ). I guess what I`am looking for is how to get started with this type of carving or a tutorial on it, or a web site with info on it If someone could help me get started I would appreciate it. I know this, is the right place to post this, because i`am a beginnerMonkey Thanks in advance. John |

Here's a few links to info. I found when looking to learn like you are now: http://users.netonecom.net/~vanantg/howto.html http://www.fancarversworld.com/ http://www.michiganhumanities.org/to...fancarving.htm http://museum.msu.edu/s-program/mh_a...s/2001GVA.html You can get a copy of a how to article from WCI magazine: http://www.foxchapelpublishing.com/p...7&disccode=wci Whittling a Fan-tailed Hummingbird by Rick Wiebe Wood Carving Illustrated - Issue 18 - Spring 2002 In E. J. Tangerman's "Whittling and Woodcarving" which is widely available--probably can easily be found at a library--on pages 92-99, there's a chapter on fan carving. Here's a book on fan carving: http://www.bookwire.com/bookwire/Bow...ov2004/fan.htm This should get you started. I bet there's somebody close by since you're in Michigan that could teach you how to carve fans. Check with the local carving clubs. Here's a link to the list: http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.co...s_MA_SD.php#MI

Almost forgot--here's another article "Fan Carving" by Sally and David Nye (same authors of the book listed in my last post) in Carving Magazine Issue 10 pg. 13-19 with a pattern in the pullout section. This is probably all you need to get started.

| Bob, Thanks for the info, I have already looked at the 4 web sites you`ve listed. The first one is good, but I`d like to see alittle more detail. I`am going to check the library and see if they have any books on fan carving. I`am also going to talk to someone from the Woodbee carving club tomarrow, That club is in Iron Mountain, Mi. and is about 100 mi away. I found out that they also have a annual carving show in October, that I`ll be sure to go to. I have subscribed to Woodcarving Illustrated 3 weeks ago and waiting for my first Magazine. It looks like the magazine to have if your into carving. I`ve been looking in this fourm a lot lately, as I just picked up the hobby of wood carving. And must say that this forum is the best, I`ve found a lot of helpful information here. I think Fan Carving is kinda neat and would like t give it a try. Again thank you John |
