| | Re: Eagle Francesco, I like your carving. It is an excellent first attempt with birds. The feathers do not detract from a piece such as this one. The feathers on the head of an eagle are difficult to distinguish as individuals and you have used carving to indicate the flow. I think it would add to the carving if you brought the body feathers closer together in an over-lapping look, smooth the lines a little, reduce the depth in the middle of the feather a bit, and add some lines for the vanes.
I am attaching some photos showing how I did the head and feathers of an eagle relief similar to yours.
I hope you enjoy and continue with bird carving, especially since your first one turned out so well. |

| | Re: Eagle Francesco, looks like a good start at carving birds, to me! If I was a bird carver, maybe I could give you some pointers, but I'm not, so all I can say is "Well done"!

| | Re: Eagle That looks really good for a first attempt at bird carving, especially when my own first attempt at carving an eagle ended up looking more like a parrot!!
Thanks for posting!
I appreciated Paul's pictures too- very helpful.

| | Re: Eagle A good start Francesco. You have nice detail, around the eye and on the head also. Your feathers are a good shape, just blend them together. the edge of one should touch the other. A pointed feather is the easiest for me to carve. I use a flame shaped diamond bit and drag it running at high speed to make the shapes. Then I go back and make each feather or part feather tent shaped. Its really simple once you get the hang of it. Mostly I don't even draw them on, I just put on a few flow lines, and carve the feathers, starting with small feathers then progressing to larger ones, never all the same size. |
