Is it a faux paux to use a dremel tool for the finer details of a carving?

I'd say use whatever tools you like as long as you get the results you're looking for!!

I don't know.......why would you want to carve with a fox paw?

Hey, crank up the Dremmel and let the dust land where it may. It's YOUR carving so if you want to use a cheese grater from the kitchen, it isn't anybody else's business. I use a dremmel, but mostly for small hogging and once in a while for difficult undercuts.

Hey Jack,
I agree...whatever it takes to get the result you want with your carving...go for it! Once you've learned to remove every particle of wood with a knife, what difference does it make how you do it. Most of us have so little time to carve that we welcome any shortcuts that work and get the look we want. There's some really fine wood sculptors out there who use lots of power tools to get their projects completed.

Ya know....it kinda like cooking from scratch vs using mixes. If the mix produces the taste, nutrition, and look you want in 1/2 the time---then why keep doing the scratch process.

Jack
Many relief carvers use a router to remove the background from their carvings. The day of the one tool carver is long gone. If it works for you do it.
Cheers

Sorry to disagree with everyone here but,

If God meant for us to use power, we would have a pigtail attached somewhere; perhaps in place of a navel.

God gave us a brain to use! Using it to make carving easier is powerful.

I don't disagree with anyone here as I believe the true art of carving has long gone. Not to many carvers take a piece of wood and start carving. They cut the blank out on a bandsaw and then some uses power tools to carve off excessive wood then get down to the nitty gritty of detailing. That is fine and I have no problem with it as I do it also. However, I do like the idea of a block of wood and start from the beginning and use a knife to carve or whittle away the excess. I guess it depends on if one is making a living and has a duplicator or one who does it for fun and relaxation. It is up to the individual on how and what to use. The worse carving every was the best.
I know an old 81 year old who has been carveing well, all of his life and he laughs when I asked where he got the blank. He carves a block of wood without any reference lines except what is in his mind. That to me is a True and old time Carver.

Well I don't have a 110 volt outlet in my navel, but Like Rick, I figure if God intended us to use something, he would have provided us with it! Like if God had intended us to use knives, he would have given us a lot tougher fingernails! Or if God had intended us to have fiberglass boats, he would have planted fiberglass trees!

hehehe.....
