Not knowing what it is you want to carve makes giving advice a little difficult. I have found that roots make nice pieces with wood spirits carved in them. Oak roots will be a little difficult with hand tools, so I think I would opt for power carving them. There are several good books available on the subject. You might search the sponsor of this site for such a listing. Good luck and welcome to the world of carving. Ric |

sounds like good advice from Ric...if you use hand knives on a root, chances are there is dirt and grit in it and it will be very hard on your knives..! ???
