Default Doane Experience

Anyone attending the Doane Experience this year? I’ve never been and wonder if any members have and if so what your feelings about it are.

Hi Ed,

I've not attended Doane, but a couple of our carving club members have. They spoke highly of it but were quick to say they went to take specific instructors of specific carving subjects. Both took their own rv/campers to stay in while there. The price was good. I have always thought I'd like to try it, but haven't been able to work it into the summer schedule yet.

GO!! If you can still get in. The Midwest carvers require that you be a member first - it may already be too late this year. They have a variety of instructors - all pretty good - you'd have to sleep through it to not learn anything. They have a brochure that describes the classes and the instructors. Pick one that interests you, and go for it! If you do not have an RV, they house you in a dormitory. It is quite comfortable, not plush - but, golly - you're only sleeping there! You eat in a cafeteria, carve, eat, carve, eat, and then carve some more 'til bedtime, sleep, start all over - for 5 days. It is wonderful, and you will meet some terrific folks - carvers really are among the nicest people. I recommend you do it. The price is also very reasonable. All this is based on experience 10 years ago, so I hape things haven't changed too much. Sandy

Colin, It is a 5 day carving experience on the campus of Doane college in Crete Nebraska (just a little south & west of Lincoln). They have a bunch of classes - most of them for the full 5 days - about 20 instructors it seemed like, but perhaps fewer. Topics ranged from animals, birds, caricatures to relief, chip-carving, even some painting and basketweaving when I was there. All the instructors were top-notch carvers, etc, but some were better instructors than others. When I attended 10 years ago, tuition was about $200, but you have to remember that gas was less that $1 then. I'm sure things have changed.

I was there last year and am going again this year. We had seven of us that attended from our local groups and had a ball! This year we have even more going as some others picked up on it after we got back raving about the good time. The dorm rooms were great and the food was outstanding the full time we were there. If you don't gain weight you didn't try everything. We drove over 1400 miles to get there and it was well worth it!
