hi i am very intrested in carving a wooden chain, but all my attempts have ended in failure and frustration. I was wondering if anybody has any tips on how to carve them, like i have read that you use your knife to open up the holes in the chains, but HOW do you use the knife to clear out the wood in the middle??? thanks alot for your time, please help me i want to make one for my moms birthday which is 10 days from now and i think she'd really love it Travis Last edited by tmac9; 07-02-2011 at 04:49 PM. |

In all seriousness, you might want to shoot for Christmas. It isn't that hard to do, it's just hard for me to explain how to do it. Quite a few books have it in them. Might try googling whittling/wooden chain and see what happens.........GOOD LUCK!

Try a sharp little gouge, leave space so that the links are not pulled up against each other until they are freed. Sometimes a drill is useful to start removing wood from an interior space. When I was a little kidlet, I was absolutely delighted to whittle a crude scruffy couple of links with a dull pocket knife from an inappropriate splintery chunk of wood. Got it from Boys Life magazine, which I had to sneak from the magazine pile in class, because in the mid 1950s children of my variety were absolutely definitely not supposed to look at Boys Life Magazine. I still sometimes work with linked wood. Brent, good suggestion to google it. |

Check this out.....then ask questions again. YouTube - ‪wood carving chain‬‏ How to Whittle a Chain (Wood Carving) | eHow.com When I get in a rhythm, it takes me about 45 minutes to an hour per link (roughly 1" by 2"). Don |

i carved a couple layout on a 2x2 in maple or hard wood layout 1 on 1 side then the other use a drill to hog out the middle carve the outside first then carve the middle use a thin knife to cut free the links the first chain the links should be at least 1/2-3/4 round links there be harder to break, link size 2"x3" that will be big enough to work with to hook more links togother u can saw on a 45% at the top of a link then glue it together i made my from 2-3 ft long pcs. then put it together like that i made 1 about 15ft long from walnut where the links connect together where they cross carve from all 4 sides then when it;s about 1/2 in. cut through with a sharp thin knife if u have a dremel tool, fuzzy ball-barrel that will help speed things up drill the middle out by drilling holes 1 beside the other Last edited by chipmunk; 07-03-2011 at 11:13 PM. |

Here is one I did, along with an "in the round version"... There several books that include instructions for both and I am sure if you Google "Carved wooden chain" you will find videos, images and all sort of instructions on the InterWeb. |
