There's no substitue for good steel. I'd take 2 good knives over a box full that won't take a good edge and hold it. The experience with poor hunting knives was more expensive than just buying right the first time.

I'm looking at Al Goodmans now for a 3rd carving knife just to get the upswept shape to try. Knife #1 was a mistake. Not bad, but way too much work to get it shaped and sharpened right.

Absolutely LOVE Swissmade with Flexcut running a very close second. I do have a few Ashley Iles gouges that are very good for hogging and aggressive background lowering due to the thick blades and tangs used in England.

I bought/use the FlexCut forged blade knives (set of 4). Other than that - I make any other I need. For something in the pocket, I have the FlexCut Carving Jack & the Whittlin Jack - both very nice tools.

I exclusively use Flexcut. Currently making my own knives from old tool steel files. I will be purchasing a couple of helvie knives, and will be investing in one of those flexcut carvin jacks!

I just received two Alan Goodman knives I ordered. One is the l 3/4" upswept and the other is l l/4 straight edge. Fabulously sharp. These knives could slice an eyelash. And they are so easy to handle. I got the 5 l/4" handles. I have several Flexcut knives but Alan's knives are so much easier to slice through wood with. And he's a terrific man to deal with.

Just curious, those of you who have Allen Goodman knives, how in the world did you ever buy them. I have tried numerous times in different ways to contact him and I am always referred to his different sites but I never get any kind of a response. I would like to know how much and how long it takes to get one. I know he is a busy guy but if you all are buying them I'd like to know how.
