I have a 1 5/8in carving knife by Ralph Long and really like his knves. I am going to buy a inch or less knife and a 2 1/4in+ knife. This time I want to buy froma different person to see who I prefer and have more variety. Where does everyone else buy thier carving knives?

I really don't think you could beat a Drake or Ralph Long knife ! Rick at Little Shavers Wood Carving Supply has a 1 1/4" Lyons knife, it is on my list of knives that I want, they cut really nice. My only complaint about Lyons is the handle is to thin, I like a thicker handle. Dave Last edited by Gulf Coast Handyman; 09-16-2009 at 09:41 PM. |

I have only been carving since last Christmas. My wife bought me a set of Ramelson palm tools and a knife from Chipping Away. When I started to add a few more tools I started buying Flexcut. There are no stores around here that sell carving tools, but the Flexcut factory is right down the road. I didn't want to wait for mail order so called them up and I can pick them up an hour later. So far I am very satisfied with them. I have a few of their palm tools, a roughing knife and two different size detail knives. I like the handles on the knives and all hold an edge nicely with a little honing occasionally. Tim |

I used to buy my knives from Flexcut but once I had the main 4 knives I didn't ever find the need for more. I have a lot of knives the majority of them I make myself the only knives I have been buying recently are from Del Stubbs at Pinewood Forge Scandinavian Knives His knives are well up to my very high standards both a work of art in them selves and extremely functional. I have a few store bought knives, but none were bought from any of the choices in the poll. The knives I use most are ones I have made myself out of straight razors or modified from knives I have had or bought off Ebay. That said, I have plans on purchasing a Denny knife or just the blade and making my own. I also would like to try a Allen Goodman knife and a Drake knife... heck I would like one of each of all the top makers' knives.

My vote goes to Lyon's. Very good knives. Very sharp and ready to go when you get them.

Since I've been carving, I've bought tool just about everywhere. My first mallet gouges were bought from a local woodworking/cabinet shop. I've bought gouges from e-bay and palm gouges directly from Flexcut. I once bought a knife from a carving show, but all of my knives currently in use were made by me. |
