Question How do i stop the bleeding (paint)

Hi Family Carver (I'm still a Newbie)

Need you imput/suggestions on this one please.

In our little gathering of wood carvings that I belong too, have given me some good practices to do.

On about what to do BEFORE I paint my project it was suggested that I mix up Boiled Leed Seed Oil with Turpentine 50% of each.

By the way the entire garage SMELLS/STINKS PHEW.
My wife is really getting on me about it, I must say I dont' blame her.

I'm to bruxh on this mixture and quickly rub it into the wood and leave it for 24hrs. before painting.
All this is to prevent the paint from BLEEDING INTO THE OTHER COLORS on my project.

Does it work...Humm! to a point. I have seen the paint bleen into the other colors very little BUT IT DOES.

And other suggestions on: WHAT DO YOU GUYS/GALS DO TO PREVENT THE BLEEDING FROM HAPPENING
P.S. I do use Deft afterwards.

Colors tend to bleed most in the endgrain of wood. Try to design your project to avoid color breaks near the edge of endgrain. Another idea that I learned as a young lad was to make an incision (cut) along the color boundary and put wax in the incision. Use thicker colors.

Schooner, You might try Watco Danish oil instead of BLO, Not near the smell. Like Phil mentioned, a stop cut, or you can burn the line with a woodburner, and also when your brush is loaded with paint, touch your carving with the brush away from the line, then work towards it. The brush has a tendency to unload the majority of the paint when you first touch the wood.

Good luck, Tom

I added "paint" to your title -> this will allow the site program to search for similar titled threads (see the bottom of the page)....

Or a search would have yielded some results but you may have gotten more than you cared to read through (not related to what you wanted to know).

Some use a burner to differentiate the areas to prevent paint from bleeding over. I like to make sure that I use deep cuts between those areas. You can paint over a wet - actually damp - carving (water) instead of using the BLO/turpentine mixture. I have even used a sealer on occasion that works well.

Most of these ideas are in previous posts linked below - plus more.

Red face Re: How do i stop the bleeding (paint)

All the above suggestions are great, especially the "stop cut" around the perimiter of each color, just make it with your thinnest blade and straight in, doesn't have to be deep to prevent bleed over the cut.

You also might try using the smallest brush you have on the perimeter of each color, like a detail brush. even when it is a big area (like pants or a shirt), I put in the perimeter with the detail brush as it doesn't hold as much paint, therefore less to bleed with.

As with all things , practice, practice, practice makes perfect (or at least less bad )

I just finished painting a Santa over the weekend and experienced the bleeding paint problem. I will have to try some of the great advice here, as painting is not one of my favorite things to do.

i have used stop cuts between colors, have recently started burning that line in, and i like the effect-- i get better paint control using a shader brush over the oval ones i have used in the past-- i think i get better color penetration by wetting the entire carving first -- then when im done painting i use BLO and a bit of burnt sienna paint mixed together for a antiquing finish and then complete with a few coats of krylon matte finish.

this is another topic where you will find as many answers and combinations as there are people using them find someones carvings that you like the look of and ask what was done. most of us are willing to share that information.

also you will likely change ur finishing technique as time goes on-- not sure why we do that-- but most of us do it.

These are all good ideas. If you are using paint that has been watered down, the problem is even greater. Sealing the pores of the wood helps keep the paint from running so much. One thin coat of a wood sealant such as Deft should help that, then you won't have to worry about the linseed oil smell. You'll have a different one for your wife to complain about. :O)

great thrad title first off! When i color my bits I use a very dry brush. It takes longer to get that good rich coat, but then its worth it. Best of luck - make something beautiful for the wife - this will make her not mind the fumes so much - she will then have an appreciation for what you are doing! POst pics when you can!
