Default Where do I start?

I'd like to carve a wooden doll like one of these http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~sf2a-iin/07.html . What do I need to start? what's a good sourse for wood and what kind should I use? where should I buy my tools? TIA

and I believe I might have another, and I am sure there are many if you do a google search if you get the proportions down in your mind then it is mechanical getting it on the wood. There are also untold numbers of books on carving people etc. You will get a lot more help from others here that are more knowledgeable than I am about it, but hope this helps some..

rick@littleshavers.com
and ask his advice on tools and maybe books. Other than that, as Hi-Ho said, google is a wonderful tool.

Hi Starleigh,
I don't have it, but I have seen a book that covers carving dolls. Might want to check our host's site, Fox Chapel Books, to see if they carry it. I think basswood would be your best starting wood. Have you carved before? Try to find a carving club or source of supplies and instruction if you can---that will make it easier. However, many carvers are self-taught with a knife and a book! I'd think it would be harder, but doable. Good Luck. Let us know how you're doing and if you need help...post your questions here, too.
